Exploring Daufuskie Island

After anchoring outside of Daufuskie, we headed to Freeport Marina at 9:00 on Sunday morning.  No one was up as early as us so we could take any slip we wanted.  The marina is first come first serve and is free!!!!  I think it is far more popular on Friday and Saturday nights when the restaurant is open.  We were glad to have it all to ourselves.

The tanks in Savannah are barely visible
Ready for a golf cart ride!

Daufuskie is south of Hilton Head Island,  north of Tybee Island in Georgia and west of Savannah, Georgia.  It does not have a bridge to the mainland.   It is five miles long and two miles wide.  One may take a ferry from Hilton Head, Bluffton, or Savannah to the island

Our first stop is the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church

Silver Dew Winery  in a building used to store oil for the lamp at the Bloody Point Island Lighthouse which was constructed in 1883.  Converted to a winery in the mid 1900's by Pappy Burn and closed in 1956.  Now this building and the home behind it are private property.

I had to stop and take some pictures of this house.  I like the interesting windows.  A woman jogging by told me there is more to see when Meg Ryan is at the house.  She then went on to tell me that the house is John Mellencamp's home.  Funny that the only house I wanted to take a picture of was the home someone famous.

After leaving the metal works studio, we headed back to the marina to return the golf cart--we were amazed to see a single cow standing beside the road.

Isle of Hope to Daufuskie Island

On Saturday, July 27 after repairing the water leak, and making a last minute run to Home Depot, we left Isle of Hope.  Our nephew, Matthew, joined us for this trip.  Matthew is 11 years old.  He and Piper were born the same year 2001.  Matthew is two months older than Piper--he made sure I knew who was older.  Piper is covered in gray hair and moves much more slowly than Matthew, but hey--if he wants us to know he is older,  that's fine with me.

We arrived at our anchorage outside of Daufuskie in the late afternoon.  Steve got some help from Matthew setting the anchor and securing the snubber line. (I am not sure about how to use this word snubber but I do know that  its job is to help divert some of the pressure on the anchor chain)

After anchoring, we took the dinghy into the municipal dock and wandered around.  We were looking for a golf cart to rent.  We arrived to a party boat that had been rented by a group having a family reunion.  They had all landed there and eaten at Marshside Mama's.

Marshide Mama's was very helpful, but did not have golf cart rental.  They referred us to Freeport Marina for a rental.  We arrived at Freeport about 4:30.  They wanted to charge us $60 for renting the golf cart for less than two hours because they were closing.  We tried to bargain with them to cut the price, but they were not going to budge.  We walked around the marina for a little while then headed back to the boat for dinner.
