Pickett Bridge Recreation Area

Linked to Charleston by the 8 lane Ravenal Bridge over the Cooper River, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina was for many years populated by Charleston residents who chose to build summer homes across the river from Charleston.  These homes are centered around an area now known as Old Village near the Pitt Street Bridge.  The Pitt Street Footbridge was used to cross from Mount Pleasant to Sullivan's Island.  (Historic tidbit:  this bridge was crossed by the crew of the submarine H.L. Hunley when test piloting the famous sub on its way to Breach Inlet)

A steel drawbridge was built in 1929 but dismantled in 1945.  Now the remains of this bridge in the Intercoastal Waterway are used as a park called the Pickett Bridge Recreation Area named for the town's doctor Otis Pickett.  The Ben Sawyer Bridge was built in 1945 as a swing bridge opening at its axis to allow passage of boats needing more than 32 feet vertical clearance.

We had seen the remains of this bridge when we came in by boat--on Tuesday, we set out by bike to find the bridge and the Old Village.

We passed by several people on bikes and many others walking and jogging.  That's my bike--love it!

This set up here with the umbrella is where a local girl was crabbing.   Steve was impressed because she was using the expensive parts of the chicken for bait not the wings.

Little Man is walking slow in the heat

We met Little Man and his owner walking.  She told us she had lost 50 pounds and little man had lost some too since they began their exercise routine!
