A steel drawbridge was built in 1929 but dismantled in 1945. Now the remains of this bridge in the Intercoastal Waterway are used as a park called the Pickett Bridge Recreation Area named for the town's doctor Otis Pickett. The Ben Sawyer Bridge was built in 1945 as a swing bridge opening at its axis to allow passage of boats needing more than 32 feet vertical clearance.
We had seen the remains of this bridge when we came in by boat--on Tuesday, we set out by bike to find the bridge and the Old Village.
We passed by several people on bikes and many others walking and jogging. That's my bike--love it!
This set up here with the umbrella is where a local girl was crabbing. Steve was impressed because she was using the expensive parts of the chicken for bait not the wings.
