Beaufort to Thunderbolt

January 14, 2013

Early in the morning in Beaufort

We left our anchorage on the Beaufort River and headed south.  Immediately we came upon Port Royal followed by Parris Island.  After crossing  Port Royal sound into which the Chechessee and Broad Rivers feed we could see Hilton Head Island.  We then traveled the Calibrogue Sound to Haig Point on Daufuskie Island.  I have read that  Daufuskie means "da first key" of South Carolina.  I don't know if this is true or not, but it does help me pronounce the name more accurately.   We took Ramshorn Creek to the New River, then took Walls Cut to the Wright River.  Then Fields Cut took us to the Savannah River into Georgia while passing Jones Island, Bird Island and McQueens Island.  It sure felt good to be in our home state!!!  575 miles on the ICW and we made it to Georgia.   Next we took the Elba Island Cut  to the Wilmington River and into Thunderbolt.  Just past Thunderbolt we turned into the Herb River to stay for the night.

This little guy jumped onto the swim platform.  We could see his bones.

Beaufort SC

We are heading to Beaufort, SC today.  We plan to dock at the free city docks and walk around town for a while. From the Bull River where we anchored, we took the Coosaw River to the Beaufort River.  It was about 20 miles to Beaufort from Bull River.  We were traveling at high tide, so there was no danger or running aground.

After finding the city docks, we walked into town.  Beaufort is a sleepy little town littered with history and historic homes.  We walked into a few shops and along the city park that runs alongside the river.  While I was in one store, I looked out and saw a person I recognized from home.  Rather than make a fool of myself, like I have been known to do when I think I know someone, I took a good look at the man in the truck.  He looked at me too--I guess he would when he saw some woman staring at him from the street corner.  Fortunately, I recognized his wife in the passenger seat.  They parked and got out to talk with us for a few moments.  Mike and Terri from Grayson, Georgia, have a home in Hilton Head, SC and decided to come into Beaufort for a change.  It was a delight to have run into them.  We may run into them again when we arrive in Hilton Head.  Wow--don't we live in a small world?

Wimbee Creek Anchorage

January 13, 2013

Wimbee Creek is a nice  place to anchor.  We arrived just before sunset.  There are houses in the distance.  Be sure not to get too close to the homes because there have been reports of boats getting anchors stuck on concrete debris evidently tossed into the creek after development.
Where has all the water gone?

Mr. Adventure installed the bell --look closely to see the engraving.

We had a peaceful night at anchor.  There were no winds and no sounds from the ghosts of pirates past and not a peep from screeching eels of The Princess Bride.  We were again surrounded by a dense fog this morning.  I went out to watch the sunrise and listen to the world wake up.  I heard what I thought was a deer snort at a duck as it bent down to drink some water.  The birds are up early calling out orders to their flock and perhaps warning off other birds.  A woodpecker began his day early.  I heard the bird my Granddaddy used to tell me was saying "prettygirlprettygirlprettygirl".    Mr. Adventure joined me to hear the morning concert of the animals.  He identified one sound as the call of a loon.  However, he couldn't believe a loon would be in these parts.  There are cows somewhere announcing their hunger to the world.  When the fog lifted, I could see the herd of cattle drinking from the river.  I also saw and heard a dolphin "snort" when it came up from beneath the water.  So, I did not hear a dear as I had thought.

What is that big blob?

Looks like ink blob art

Crystal clear not, but not as interesting.
