Corvette Show in St. Petersburg

Straub Park in St. Petersburg on Saturday is always interesting.  Saturday, May 28 was no different as the Suncoast Corvette Association presented the "Corvettes at the Pier" exhibition.   Originally built in Michigan and Missouri, the Corvette is now manufactured in Bowling Green, Kentucky.  It is, coincidentally, the official sports car of the commonwealth of Kentucky.

The very first Corvette (a convertible) was introduced in 1953 at the GM Motorama as a concept car. Three hundred were built for the 1953 model year.  All were Polo White with red interior.   In 1954 one could purchase a Corvette in Pennant Blue, Sportsman Red, Polo White or Black.

The name given to this popular car by Myron Scott is a reference to the smallest class of a vessel that can be properly considered a warship.   Some of the cars pictured below look like warships with doors and hoods opening upwards and the stealthy shape.
