Saturday, March 7 was a day of rest for us. We slept late, at breakfast and decided to
take a walk. The morning was cool so it
was perfect to take Piper for a walk at the Bimini Sands Nature Trail. We were encouraged to visit this natural area
because it is rumored that there are investors who want to purchase this land
to make it into a resort. It seems that
this may be more true than false as there is a new Casino in north Bimini that is reportedly beautiful and
expensive and provides much for the Bimini economy.
The trail wanders through the forest and adjacent to the
ocean. There are some ruins and some
placards identifying a variety of flora and fauna. While reading one of the placards we could
hear some rustling in the leaves.
Looking down at the trail we saw hermit crabs moving across the fallen
leaves. There were many "do not
touch" signs identifying the Poisonwood trees. The sap from these trees can cause a terribly
reaction worse than poison ivy. We
stayed way far away.
