Black Creek is a tributary of the St. Johns River. It is about 13 miles long. We traveled most of it by dinghy. It originates at Kingsley lake and flows north and east through Camp Blanding and Jennings State Forest. We found that the depths of Black Creek were plenty for us. The depth sounder never found anything less than 23 feet--more than enough for the big boat to go through this beautiful area. There are a few homes scattered here and there but most of the creek is natural. Decaying leaves and vegetation give off tannins which make the creek black--hence the name.
The Black Creek Marina does not allow live-aboards, but does allow transient boaters for a night or two. The dock master was very kind to help us with tying the dinghy when we stopped here to walk Piper. He was glad to share all his knowledge of fishing the area as well.
The house above is for sale along Peters Creek which forks off of Black Creek. The area is remote, quiet and a great place to fish or just sit and enjoy the peace. The little guy below was happy to pose for me.
